Marie Alexander: Family of 89-year-old killed in Watts hit-and-run wants driver to speak up: ‘You know who you are’

WATTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The family of an 89-year-old woman killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles are demanding justice as the search for the driver is underway.

“We will not stop,” said the victim’s niece, Meggan Mauldin, during a vigil on Saturday. “We won’t stop like you didn’t stop. This is my aunt… my aunt, you hit her and ran away.”

The incident happened near 109th Street and Central Avenue just after 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Surveillance cameras from the market just outside the scene captured the moment on video.

Authorities say the woman, whose family has been identified as Marie Alexander, was hit by a dark-colored Chevrolet vehicle as she attempted to cross the street. The driver didn’t stop.

“You wake up, you get the message that she’s not here, then you see the videotape and you just know someone just accelerated and drove on,” said Alexander’s nephew, Elmer Mauldin.

Family members described Alexander as a very loving woman and ambassador for her family. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the driver’s arrest.

“Whoever did this… how can you live with you?” asked Alexander’s son Paris Payton. “Moms was a good person, are you going to hit someone and run away?”

Alexander, a mother of two, also had two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, but family members said she was the mother of so many more.

“Marie raised and nurtured us all,” said Elmer Mauldin. “She was just loved and loved by everyone.”

Meanwhile, the owners of the market near the accident site say it is a dangerous area for pedestrians and there is a problem with streetlights.

“Lately, especially lately, it’s been really dark. There are no lights and there are hit-and-runs, car accidents all the time. It’s a dangerous road,” said Valeria Cordero.

They said there was a similar accident just a few meters away just three days ago.

“We have car accidents all the time here, so I knew a car crash or something happened,” Cordero added.

Investigators believe the suspect’s vehicle likely sustained front-end damage from the fatal collision. Family members hope the driver is doing the right thing.

“We won’t stop until you face whoever you are, you know who you are. Please, we want justice for my aunt,” said Alexander’s niece, Latrice Lane.
