Mary McDonnell joins Justin Hartley in the CBS pilot The Never Game.

In her first regular series role since Great CrimesMary McDonnell will star alongside Justin Hartley on CBS The Never Game drama pilot.

The 2019 adaptation of Jeffrey Deavers’ novel follows Colter Shaw (played by This is us alum Hartley), a lonely survivor who roams the land as a “reward seeker,” using his expert scouting skills to help private individuals and law enforcement solve all sorts of mysteries – all while grappling with his own dysfunctional family.

Speaking of which…McDonnell will play Mary Dove Shaw, Colter’s strong and uncompromising mother, reports our sister site Deadline.

After raising her three children on the remote California compound where her husband took her before his mysterious death, Mary now represents “the emotional center of Colter’s restless life” while holding “the key to the mysteries of his past” in the hand holding.

McDonnell was last seen on television in ABC’s Short Lived rebeland will play Madeline Usher on Netflix The Fall of the House of Usher.

Hartley will also serve as executive producer on the future series This is us EP Ken Olin, who will direct the pilot.

“I couldn’t be happier The Never Game coming to CBS and that Colter Shaw will soon be brought to life on screens,” Hartley said in a statement released when the commitment to the pilot was first announced. “When I read the book, I was immediately drawn to the character and the story; Developing this project with Ken was a labor of love.
