Maybe it’s time for Dwayne Johnson to get into some real acting

That Dwayne Johnson Film has become a subgenre in its own right over the last decade and has changed in that just by seeing the actor’s and producer’s name on the poster you can almost certainly guarantee what kind of production you’re going to get.

The budget will be at least $100 million, the main character will be either a former or current member of the military or law enforcement who is either a determined family man or a traumatized one struggling with the loss of his nearest and dearest. There’s also guaranteed banter, a one-note villain, a protagonist who’s essentially just Johnson playing himself, and at least one character who hints at just how tall and muscular he is.

Ironic, Black Adam deviated from that template more than most Johnson vehicles and ended up being perhaps the greatest embarrassment of his career. Sure, The Rock has starred in worse projects that made less money at the box office, but after being attached to the comic book antihero for 15 years and then spending the entire promotional path announcing a complete overhaul of the power hierarchy, he was kicked out His James Gunn and Peter Safran ass is a disaster for his image.

Even Marvel fans have made it pretty clear they wouldn’t be over the moon to see the 50-year-old in Kevin Feige’s universe, so maybe now is the time for Johnson to do some real acting for a change. It’s been almost 10 years since he’s had to give a real “performance” and it’s no coincidence that it’s his turn with Michael Bay pain & gain is among his best.

He’s got biceps, weird timing, and charisma for days, but since he can’t play the action hero forever, the timing couldn’t be better to see Johnson do the unexpected and… you know, act. Maybe it’s time for Dwayne Johnson to get into some real acting
