Ken Wharfe served as Princess Diana’s bodyguard for 5 years and also protected Prince Harry and Prince William.
Wharfe who wrote the book Diana: Top secret, shared his unique perspective on the royals after working for the family. During an interview with GB News, presenter Mark Dolan asked Wharfe: “What would Diana have thought of the tension between the two brothers? What would she have thought of Harry’s departure for the United States?”
The former bodyguard had a lot to say about it. “I think what’s been missing from my observations over the past few years is that they needed someone to really deliver that facility,” he said.
“It doesn’t make sense that when they were two little kids they were really connected at the hip,” he explained. More importantly, of course, her father the Prince of Wales saw her, certainly as the Queen told him four or five years ago, when the Duke of Edinburgh was relieved of royal duties because of his ill health… The Prince had the idea that his two young princes are part of that kind of pyramid to lead the royal family into the future.”
The former bodyguard added, “Unfortunately, it looks like he’s lost a third of that.”
Bodyguard doesn’t think Meghan gave royal life ‘a real shot’
Wharfe went on to talk about Prince Harry and Meghan. “I think Diana would certainly have understood where Harry came from in terms of his desire for a life change,” he said. “But would have understood clearly: ‘Listen, wait a minute, let’s just give this a little time.’ Because her departure from the royal family was really sudden.”
He added, “I don’t think Meghan gave that a real chance.”
Wharfe also addressed how the royal family had an issue with Meghan and Diana. “If there’s any resemblance, like Diana, she was clearly incredibly popular,” he explained. “The royal family in general has a problem with younger members coming into the family who are more popular than themselves.”
He added: “I think that was a problem. I think Diana would have been a good mediator here to sort that out. Unfortunately that never happened.”
Could Princess Diana have prevented the Megxit?
When Dolan remarked, “Diana might have prevented the Megxit,” Wharfe replied, “It would have been different than what we’re seeing now.”
He continued, “I think Diana, actually having been there herself, would have seen the value in actually giving that some time.”
Wharfe added: “I think her exit was pretty premature but who knows. I personally think we could see Harry and Meghan returning in a new style and in a new format. Who knows? There’s a lot of talk about that.”
