Meghan touchingly wears the Queen’s favorite nail polish to the funeral

Meghan Markle paid a touching tribute to her late grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, on Monday as she attended the monarch’s state funeral wearing a special pink nail polish.

The Duchess of Sussex attended the funeral along with her husband Prince Harry and their royal in-laws, including the Princess of Wales (with eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte) and King Charles III with Camilla, the queen consort.

Meghan wore traditional royal mourning attire: a black dress that covered her shoulders and a large black wide-brimmed hat. Her nails were painted a pale pink shade that was known to be the late Queen’s favourite.

The monarch, who died on September 8 at the age of 96, was known for favoring a nail polish called ‘Ballet Slipper’ by cosmetics company Essie, which she wore consistently from the 1980s onwards.

Although it was widely reported, Essie herself appeared to confirm the rumors in 2017 when a company spokesman said so today: “Born in 1982, this always elegant Lacquer received the royal blessing of the Queen of England, just seven years after his birth, when Elizabeth II’s hairdresser [the brand’s founder] Essie Weingarten requesting that the umbrella be delivered direct to Buckingham Palace in London.”

The monarch was known to dislike bright nail colors and kept her nails either natural or simply tinted the almost nude shade of ‘ballet slipper’ pink.

It seems Meghan shares the late Queen’s tastes as she wore the same shade the monarch loved on her wedding day in 2018. With her simple, lined Givenchy boat-neck silk gown and diamond tiara loaned to her by the Queen, the bride opted for a muted makeup look that included delicate, pale pink shaded nails.

The choice of polish wasn’t the only touching tribute Meghan paid the Queen during Monday’s performance at the state funeral.

The Duchess also wore a pair of diamond and pearl earrings given to her by the Queen on the morning of their first solo engagement together. The memory of the day she received it so impressed the Duchess that she shared it with Oprah Winfrey during her landmark 2021 interview with the TV star.

“[The queen] has always been wonderful for me,” Meghan said during the interview, in which she also opened up about not feeling supported by the royals as a working family member.

“We had one of our first engagements together. She asked me to join her and … we had breakfast together that morning and she had given me a beautiful gift and I just loved being in her company.”

When asked by Winfrey what the gift was, Meghan replied: “She gave me beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace. And we’ve been in the car between engagements, and she has a blanket that sits over her knees for warmth. And it was chilly, and she said, ‘Meghan, come on’ and pull it over my knees too.”

She added, “I had to think of my grandmother where she was always warm and welcoming and really welcoming.”

As well as the polish and pearls, Meghan’s outfit itself had a connection to the Queen.

The mid-length black caped dress was reminiscent of a navy blue version worn at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2018 to a concert celebrating the Queen’s 92nd birthday.

After the funeral service at Westminster Abbey, Meghan and Harry escorted members of the royal family back to Windsor Castle for a more intimate ceremony, after which the Queen will be buried in St George’s Chapel.
