Michigan man charged with manslaughter after his girlfriend’s two-year-old son found a gun and fatally shot himself

A Grand Rapids-area man was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Monday after his girlfriend’s two-year-old son found a gun and fatally shot himself.
Police said the gun was in the sofa at her Kentwood home. Kiaire McCoy apparently found it and shot himself on Friday.
Markus Nevills Jr., 22, contested the charges on his first court appearance.

“I do not understand that. I’m trying to understand how they say it’s my fault. I didn’t shoot him,” Nevills said.

According to a court filing, police quoted Nevills as saying he “pulled out of control” during a high marijuana use and was flipping through his phone when the shooting ensued. Prosecutors said he acted with gross negligence.
“It sounds like a horrific accident and there is no criminal intent,” defense attorney Richard Zambon said.
