Microsoft updates last year’s Windows 10 • The Register

Do you remember 2021? Microsoft is doing this and has released a new build for the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel for Windows 10 21H2 with some useful fixes, including one where Edge becomes unresponsive when Internet Explorer mode is enabled.

The company hasn’t announced a date for Windows 10 22H2, and has instead continued to push out updates for 21H2. This (Build 19044.1947 or KB5016688) contains a number of bug fixes as well as some new features.

Granted, Microsoft’s track record with updates has been a bit patchy lately and we can only hope things go smoother this time around as there are some handy fixes in it.

The update is “not security-related,” according to Microsoft, but includes an update useful for users who want to secure their PCs — an improvement to Microsoft Defender for Endpoints to detect and stop ransomware and other attacks. Voice scenarios can also be managed across multiple endpoint managers.

Otherwise, the update includes a large number of handy fixes, including the one where the Edge browser becomes unresponsive when Internet Explorer mode is enabled (interacting with dialogs is also prevented).

Fixed an issue that “impacts BitLocker performance” as well as a somewhat embarrassing bug related to the Take a Test app that resulted in the removal of all lock enforcement-related policies when the app was closed.

According to Microsoft, the Take-a-Test app creates “the right environment to take a test”. Only the test is shown, the clipboard is cleared, other apps are inaccessible, and so on. Even Cortana is turned off (although you’d even notice if you never used Assistant?), so potentially overriding the policies when closing the app could be a little awkward.

Other fixes include handling race conditions (including one that could cause cldflt.sys to refer to invalid storage) and issues related to licensing and subscriptions. There is also a fix for an issue that could prevent virtualized App-V Microsoft Office applications from opening or running.

Corresponding AdDuplex numbers, Windows 10 21H2 continues to dominate the lion’s share of the modern PC market. So it’s heartening to see that Microsoft continues to improve the platform, even as the successor is in the wings. ®
