Midnight Club First Look: Netflix unveils new Mike Flanagan series

Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan is directing the Netflix adaptation of Christopher Pike’s novel series starring Leah Fong.

The year? 1994. The place? In your worst nightmare.

Horrifying stories come to life in The Midnight Club, the latest series from The Haunted House and Midnight Mass creator Mike Flanagan. Flanagan co-created the upcoming Netflix series, which premieres October 7, with Leah Fong and is based on the works of novelist Christopher Pike. The 10-episode series is produced by Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures with co-creator Fong, Julia Bicknell and writer Pike.

The official synopsis reads: “In a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet at midnight every night to tell sinister tales – and to search for signs of the supernatural from the afterlife.”

The ensemble cast includes Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Annarah Cymone, Chris Sumpter, Adia, Aya Furukawa, Sauriyan Sapkota, Matt Biedel and Samantha Sloyan, as well as Zach Gilford and Heather Langenkamp. Set in 1994, The Midnight Club is Flanagan and Macy’s first YA series for Netflix as part of their overall deal with Intrepid Pictures.

Novelist Pike’s select stories include ‘Witch’, ‘Gimme a Kiss’, ‘Road to Nowhere’ and ‘The Wicked Heart’, all of which are told on screen at the mysterious Brightcliffe Manor. The terminally ill teenagers at the heart of the story vow to supernaturally return to their friends after their fatal end.

Creator Flanagan told Vanity Fair that he spent decades adapting the story for the big screen.

“It was about teenagers coming to terms with terminal illness and death,” Flanagan said of Pike’s work. “And it didn’t strike there either. It was a real lesson in how to use genre to talk about very serious things. That really blew my hair back.”

He added, “The engine of season one for us is that these kids really want some kind of validation that their life isn’t really over yet. They believe that the bonds they have formed are strong enough that one of them could come back and tell the others, “Don’t be afraid. There’s something else on the other side.’”

The Midnight Club isn’t the only storytelling series coming to Netflix this fall. Guillermo del Toro’s anthology show Cabinet of Curiosities has Panos Cosmatos, Catherine Hardwicke and Jennifer Kent telling terrifying tales just in time for Halloween.

The Midnight Club premieres on Netflix on October 7th.
