WASHINGTON– Three buses from recently immigrated families arrived near the home of Vice President Kamala Harris from Texas on Christmas Eve in record-breaking cold.
Texas authorities have not confirmed their involvement, but the bus crashes are consistent with previous actions by border state governors calling attention to the Biden administration’s immigration policies.
The buses, which arrived in front of the vice president’s residence late Saturday, carried about 110 to 130 people to the city, according to Tatiana Laborde, executive director of SAMU First Response, a charity that works with the city of Washington to help thousands of dropped migrants last months.
Local organizers had expected the buses to arrive on Sunday, but found out on Saturday that the group would arrive in Washington early, Laborde said. There were also small children among the people on board.
Some wore t-shirts even though the temperature hovered around 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 degrees Celsius). According to the Washington Post, it was the coldest Christmas Eve on record in Washington.
Laborde said staff laid out blankets for people arriving on Christmas Eve and rushed them onto waiting buses to take them to an area church. A local restaurant chain donated dinner and breakfast.
Most of the arrivals were en route to other destinations and were to stay in Washington only briefly.
Gov. Greg Abbott’s office did not respond to a request for comment Sunday morning. His office said last week Texas has bused more than 15,000 people to Washington, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia since April.
Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, both Republicans, are harsh critics of President Joe Biden for his handling of the US-Mexico border, where thousands of people attempt to cross every day, many to seek asylum . Officials on both sides of the border are seeking emergency help to set up shelters and services for migrants, some of whom are sleeping on the streets.
Republicans argue that Biden and Harris, who have been named by the administration as the top drivers of migration, have eased restrictions that have prompted many people to leave their countries of origin. Biden has ended some policies but enacted others from former President Donald Trump, whose administration also grappled with spikes in border crossings and at one point separated immigrant families and children as a deterrent initiative.
