MLK Day: What’s open on Jan. 16, the federal holiday that civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the birthday of civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. He was murdered four years later.

This year the holiday falls on Monday 16 January. It’s a federal holiday, which means government agencies, banks, and many corporate offices are closed on the day.

Here’s what’s open and closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Government authorities

Non-essential government agencies – such as the Motor Vehicle Department, public libraries and city offices – will be closed. State and federal courts will also be closed. Be sure to check local guidelines in advance.

The United States Postal Service is closed on Monday, so there will be no regular mail deliveries. Other delivery services – including United Parcel Service and FedEx – will operate – although FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified services.

financial services

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are closed on Mondays. It’s a bank holiday, so most banks are closed.

ATMs and online banking services will be available.
