Monterey Park officer killed: 18-year-old from San Pedro becomes third person arrested in connection with shooting of Gardiel Solorio

DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC)– Police have made another arrest two days after a man and teenager were arrested in Downey in connection with the shooting dead of a Monterey Park police officer.

According to the Downey Police Department, Gerardo Magallanes, of San Pedro, 18, was arrested on Thursday for murder.

He has since been held in the Los Angeles County Jail pending arraignment.

Details of Magallanes’ arrest and his alleged involvement in the murder were not immediately released.

On Thursday, Carlos Delcid, 20, accused of killing 26-year-old Officer Gardiel Solorio during a robbery attempt, made his first court appearance and was ordered to remain in detention without bail pending a charge in September.

Delcid’s murder charge includes an allegation of murder during a robbery under special circumstances.

District Attorney George Gascón said he could face a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

A 17-year-old suspect – who has not been identified – who was said to be driving the couple’s getaway car was also arrested, Gascón said.

According to the district attorney’s office, the unidentified teenager was charged with murder on a single count in Compton Juvenile Court.

On Thursday, the teenager rejected the petition – which according to prosecutors corresponds to a plea of ​​not guilty in an adult court. He is expected in court on September 14.

Solorio was in his vehicle in the parking lot of an LA gym on the 12700 block of Lakewood Boulevard around 3:30 p.m. Monday when Delcid allegedly got out of a nearby car and approached Solorio, “with a gun drawn, which appears to be.” one was attempted robbery,” the prosecutor said.

Solorio was found unresponsive in his car and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Downey Police.

Funeral arrangements were still pending for Solorio, a new officer just weeks away from the academy. Monterey Park Police Chief Kelly Gordon called his murder “a senseless act of violence.”
