Musk Donald’s! Tesla receives approval to open an all-day DINER in Hollywood – complete with drive-in theater and charging station

With their roller-skate waiters and rows of polished convertibles, drive-in theaters were once all the rage in America in the 1950s and ’60s.

They gradually disappeared about 50 years ago with the advent of VHS and the preference for watching movies from home. Still, the idea of experiencing Hollywood’s golden age from the comfort of a car still evokes a sense of nostalgia.

Now, thanks to Elon Musk, they could well see a small resurgence.

That’s because the billionaire entrepreneur has received approval to open an all-night Tesla restaurant with a drive-in movie theater and charging station.

Famous film clips are shown 24 hours a day on two 45-foot LED cinema screens.

What features will the Tesla All Night Diner have?

  • Two 45-foot LED cinema screens showing famous film clips 24 hours a day
  • 28 Supercharger points
  • Indoor and outdoor seating
  • “Carhop area” on the ground floor where employees can bring meals to vehicles in the parking lot

Musk’s vision is for people to get a 30-minute glimpse of these scenes while eating and waiting for their car to charge at one of the 28 Supercharger stations.

His idea for the design was to create a retro-futuristic aesthetic billed as “Grease meets The Jetsons with Supercharger.”

The 1978 film Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, is loved around the world for capturing a teenage love story against a backdrop of 1950’s rock ‘n’ roll, where a Drive-in cinema is the ideal place to hang out, go out and meet dates.

The Jetsons, on the other hand, was an animated sitcom about a family living in a comical version of the future where flying cars, holograms, and robotic devices are the order of the day.

Tesla has released technical drawings of its proposed drive-in – to be built on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood – but no official artistic impressions yet.

That hasn’t stopped fans from creating their own works, however, including 3D renderings put together by architect Ed Howard.

Construction of the new Tesla facility is expected to begin soon after the city of Los Angeles gave the proposals the green light.

Musk has previously said Tesla-branded diners could spring up around his charging stations, having first tweeted about the idea in 2018 and filing three brands last year in connection with a possible entry into the restaurant business.

Tesla originally planned to build the restaurant in the coastal city of Santa Monica, but moved plans to Hollywood on historic Route 66.

This includes the demolition of a Shakey’s Pizza Parlor at its current location and the construction of a new diner in its place.

In February, Musk tweeted that a “futuristic diner/drive-in theater” was “planned for the Hollywood area”!

The ground floor of the venue will feature a kitchen, ottoman and booth seating and an outdoor bar surrounding the perimeter of the building, while the upper deck will feature rooftop outdoor seating and an area for theater style seating.

There will also be a “carhop area” on the ground floor where staff can deliver meals to vehicles in the parking lot. There will be over 200 seats in total.

It’s hard to tell from the technical drawings what the facility will look like, but Tesla may be aiming for a more futuristic style, although the idea was originally conceived as an “old-school” diner.

It could also be a mixture of both.

The project has now been approved and further details are to follow shortly.
