Nathalie Emmanuel asked to audition but never thought she would be cast

game of Thrones was Nathalie Emmanuel’s big breakthrough. Before the HBO epic, Emmanuel was a regular in British drama Hollyoaks. Thanks to game of Thronesshe later joined Fast and the Furious Franchise and Hulu Four weddings and one death Adjustment. Emmanuel admits game of Thrones was her dream that she never expected to achieve.

Emmanuel was a guest on the Happy sad confused Podcast on August 23 to discuss their new film The invitation. looking back game of ThronesEmmanuel revealed she never expected to make it on the show and she kind of freaked out when she arrived on set.

Emmanuel said she was considering it game of Thrones your dream. She was also realistic as an actress in the beginning, so she was actually a surprise to get the audition.

“It was a game changer and that’s no understatement,” Emmanuel continued Happy sad confused. “I mean, I was a fan of the show, yes. I teased my agent for a while because I got an audition. But I never really thought it was possible. There has been talk of why yes, they haven’t cast particularly people of color in regular lead roles. So I was like this was mine when the opportunity came along and I was like, oh my god. And then it dawned on me that now I really had to do it.”
Nathalie Emmanuel was a fan girl on the set of Game of Thrones.
When Emmanuel won the role of Missandei, she went with the cast for their first table reading of a screenplay. She was intimidated until a performer helped her.
“There were no words to describe how excited I was, how scared I was,” Emmanuel said. “I remember on first reading I just stood in the corner scared like all the main characters. Oh my god, it’s Catelyn Stark. There’s Sam Tarly. Just be a real fangirl in the corner. Actually, it was Finn Jones, whom I had met at a previous job, who said, ‘Nathalie, do you want me to help you find a place?’ It was wonderful.”
The show lived up to their expectations
Emmanuel dreamed of playing a character from Westeros. Actually being in Croatia exceeded all their expectations.

“What was amazing about it was that suddenly you step into these worlds, you step onto the set, put on your costume, it all feels so real,” Emmanuel said. “You think, oh, I’m in. I’m really in. It’s overwhelming. I had never encountered such large set pieces before. Everything I had done before was very modern and just in a pub, in a shop, at someone’s house. This very high concept stuff.”
Emmanuel also appreciated how warm and welcoming game of Thrones fans were.
“I hadn’t experienced that before and it was amazing,” Emmanuel said. “It’s so cute and you can tell there’s real art in making fantasies feel grounded and real. That’s what I think Game of Thrones did so well, the tonal nature of it. The supernatural elements or fantasy elements were so ingrained that you didn’t really realize they were particularly supernatural.”
