Season 20 of CBS’ NCIS could be visiting a fan-favorite character who hasn’t been heard from since their abrupt adoption.
The penultimate episode of Season 15, which aired back in May 2018, set the stage for original cast member Pauley Perrette’s exit via a seemingly random street robbery in which the assailant planted multiple bullets in MI6 agent Clayton Reeves and the critically wounded NCIS agent Chief Forensic hit scientist Abby Sciuto in the process. Reeves’ injuries were instantly fatal, while Perrette’s hospitalized character held him alive.
At the end of that episode, Abby — after learning that Reeves died a hero protecting her — committed to following in his footsteps by running a charity for homeless women. She then escorted Reeves’ body back to his home in London before embarking on this new chapter in her life. after sharing warm goodbyes with everyone on the team, including a semi-flashy ASL farewell of “Gibbs, Gibbs, Gibbs!”
Viewers haven’t heard from Abby in the years since, although that may be fixed in Season 20, which begins Monday, September 19 at 9/8pm.
During a fall preview with TVLine, showrunner Steven D. Binder spoke about how, following Mark Harmon’s departure last October, the most-watched TV drama has occasionally commemorated Gibbs — a la “the Leroy Jethro Gibbs College Scholarship Fund” or as an offshoot NCIS: Hawaii cleverly revealed his role in guiding Jane Tennant’s career.
“We are always thinking about how we can get involved [Gibbs] in a way that doesn’t ‘pick the scabs off’ and ruin what I felt was the only appropriate farewell for this guy,” Binder said, alluding to “Boss” settling in Alaska.
“I want to start that with Abby’s character as well. I would like to start feeling them [presence] a little more,” the showrunner shared. “I thought we were being a little lax about not doing that [doing that sooner], but there are so many moving parts…. But she’s still out there fighting the good fight and watching us, and she’s a part of us and we’re a part of her.”
Binder did not specify whether such a plan would include an on-camera encore of former cast member Perrette.
In June 2019, a year after her NCIS Exit, Perrette tweeted: “NO I’M NOT COMING BACK! EVER!” before alluding to an incident in October 2016 in which Harmon’s dog allegedly bit a crew member. In August 2019, CBS entertainment executive Kelly Kahl told TVLine that Perrette “did came to us a few years ago with a job problem. We investigated it immediately and resolved it to everyone’s satisfaction.”
In March 2019, Perrette was cast on the CBS sitcom broke, which premiered a year later and only lasted one season. “We’re really excited to have her back on the air with us,” Kahl told TVLine, “and I don’t think she would be back with us if she had major concerns.”
