Nearly 60% of Republican Voters Back Trump in White House Race 2024: Poll

Former President Donald Trump has a clear lead in the Republican primaries for the White House, a new poll shows.

The Wall Street Journal poll The study, released Saturday, found that 59% of Republican primary voters support Trump in the race, up 11 points since the media conducted a similar poll in April.

The only other candidate to garner double-digit support from Republican voters in the poll was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who received 13% support. Since the poll in April, the media noted that Trump’s lead over DeSantis has nearly doubled to 46 percentage points.

Aside from an apparent drop in popularity for DeSantis, the poll also showed weak results for other Republican 2024 presidential candidates looking to gain support while challenging the former president for the 2024 GOP nomination.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley received 8% support, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy received 5% support, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie received 3% support, and former Vice President Mike Pence and Republican South Senator Carolina, Tim Scott, both received 2% support. Support.

Haley, Ramaswamy and Christie have all seen increases in support since the Journal’s April poll, although their gains have been in the single digits.

If the 2024 presidential election were to take place today between Trump and President Biden, the poll found the two candidates are split at 46% support each. Eight percent remain undecided. Adding third-party candidates as well puts Trump ahead of Biden by 40% to 39%.

Respondents were also asked about the charges against Trump, with more than 60% of Republican primary voters insisting the numerous criminal charges were politically motivated and unfounded. Another 78% said Trump’s actions after the 2020 election were legitimate actions to ensure an accurate vote. Only 16% said Trump illegally tried to prevent Congress from confirming the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Forty-eight percent of those who took the poll said the indictments made them more likely to support Trump in 2024, while 16 percent said the legal action made them less likely to support him.

The Wall Street Journal poll was conducted August 24-30 and included telephone and web poll responses from 1,500 registered voters and 600 primary voters.
