As week 15 of the NFL season began, the playoff picture was already becoming clearer. San Francisco’s 21-13 verdict over the Seattle Seahawks in the TNF game secured the NFC West title for the 49ers. Meanwhile, it dropped the number 8 (7-7) Seahawks further out of the postseason race.
There are some big games on the Sunday NFL Week 15 roster that could go a long way toward determining playoff positions. The Kansas City Chiefs (AFC West) would secure a title with a win over the Houston Texans. A win for the Dallas Cowboys over the Jacksonville Jaguars secures them a playoff spot.
Let’s look at the best bets to play on NFL Week 15 Sunday games.
Week 15 NFL selection
Lions +1 against jets
There’s no hotter team in the NFL than the Detroit Lions. Right off the bat, they’ve won five of their last six games. Against the spread they are even better for bettors as they go 6-0 over the spread of the games.
Detroit’s offensive is loaded with guns. Quarterback Jared Goff can hand over to running back Jamaal Williams, who leads the NFL with 14 rushing touchdowns. Or he can throw to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who ranks fifth in the league with 82 receptions.
Detroit’s defense is also getting better. The Lions have not conceded more than 25 points in any of their last four games. They’ve kept teams under 20 points in three of their last six games.
It’s back to normal for the 6-7 Lions after a big win against the home favorite Minnesota Vikings. They go to MetLife Field to face the New York Jets as a 1-point underdog. However, the queue has shortened. The Jets opened as a 1.5-point pick.
This game offers an interesting contrast of styles. Detroit ranks No. 5 in the NFL averaging 26.8 points per game. In their last five games, the Lions have averaged 32.8 ppg and have not scored less than 28 points in any of those games.
Meanwhile, the Jets are ranked No. 6 on NFL defense, allowing just 18.7 ppg. But they’ve conceded 47 points in losses to the Vikings and Bills over the past two weeks. New York’s offense has a full 20 points in just three of their last eight games. The Jets are 1-3 SU in their last four games.
Detroit is 1-4 SU in its last five encounters with the Jets. But they’re not the same, old Lions. In each of the last four seasons, a 6-7 team has made the NFL playoffs. Detroit is looking to do it for the fifth year in a row.
Bengals -3.5 vs Buccaneers
Tom Brady’s retirement tour doesn’t go according to plan. The Buccaneers are 6-7, which means Brady could experience something he hasn’t experienced since he was an NFL rookie with the New England Patriots in 2000 — a losing season.
Tampa Bay still sits at the top of the dismal NFC South, but with a 1-2 slate for SU in the last three games, the Bucs have seen their lead dwindle to one game. Even more alarming for bettors, Tampa Bay has been 1-9-1 ATS for the past 11 games.
At the same time, reigning AFC champions Bengals are keen to assert that they are once again the team to beat in the conference. Cincinnati has won both SU and ATS 5-0 in their last five games. This stretch includes a win over the Kansas City Chiefs in a repeat of last season’s AFC Championship Game result.
The Bengals are 9-2 SU in their last 11 games. Against opponents AFC North, the Buccaneers have already lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, two teams Cincinnati beat this season.
Eagles vs. Buccaneers over 48.5 points
Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears have been scoring at will over the past few weeks. Philadelphia has scored 133 points over the past three weeks. The Eagles have 30+ points in six games and 40+ points in two of their last three games. They are the NFL’s best offense, averaging 29.7 points per game.
Though not as dominant offensively, Chicago has 30+ points in three of their last seven games. Equally important for a total stake, the Bears have dropped 201 points during their current six-game losing streak. That makes 33.5 points against per game.
The Bears have gone over the total in seven straight games. Philadelphia have hit the over in seven of their last eight games.
