FORT LAUDERDALE, FL– A jury said Thursday it had reached a decision on whether to recommend the execution of Florida school gunman Nikolas Cruz for the 2018 massacre that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Not released immediately, the recommendation came on the second day of deliberations, promising an end to a three-month process that included vivid videos, photos and testimonies of the massacre and its aftermath, heartbreaking testimonies from family members of the victims, and a tour of the still blood-splattered building.

The jury’s decision must be unanimous if it intends to recommend the death penalty, and when that happens it falls to District Judge Elizabeth Scherer to make a final decision. If all jurors couldn’t agree on a death penalty, Cruz would get a life sentence.
