Officers arrest second suspect in shooting outside fitness facility in South Austin, LA

A man wanted in connection with a May death in South Austin was arrested in Colorado on Tuesday.

That US Marshals said the Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, along with other law enforcement agencies, located and arrested Aug. 2 fugitive John W. Bagwell, 19, in Monument, Colo.

Bagwell was wanted on a warrant for first-degree murder in connection with a fatal May 23 shooting in the parking lot of an LA Fitness location near West Slaughter Lane and Menchaca Road. Jose Alberto Aguirre Castellanos, 36, was killed.

Witnesses said they saw three suspects flee the scene. Juan Lopez-Espinoza, 18, was charged with murder days later. With Bagwell now in custody, a suspect is still on the run.

The US Marshals said the Austin division of their Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, at the request of the Austin Police Department. On August 1, the task force received information that Bagwell may be at a rest stop in the Monument, Colorado area. The information was relayed to the Marshals Colorado Violent Offender Task Force in Colorado Springs.

Investigators set up surveillance around the rest area to locate Bagwell and eventually watched him exit a tractor-trailer parked behind the rest area with the windows covered.

Bagwell and another man got into a rideshare and exited the rest area before contact could be made. However, investigators followed the vehicle to a store. When Bagwell got out of the vehicle, officers took him into custody without incident.

Bagwell was transported to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center, where he was charged with murder. He’s awaiting extradition back to Austin.
