It’s fairly rare for a major college football team that ranks in the top 25 preseason to send a search party to campus to locate a key player for a season that’s about to begin. However, that’s what the Ole Miss Rebels did when they suddenly realized they needed a punter.
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin revealed last weekend that the newest punter to the roster, Charlie Pollock, was likely spotted somewhere around the fraternity line.
Pollock is listed at 6ft 1,250lbs and Kiffin joked about how they found him.
“I don’t know much about him. I think he was down at the sorority house, like at a keg party or whatever, that’s where they got him from,” Kiffin said. “Well, we have conditioning work to do with my guy. But we just said, ‘Hey, someone’s looking for a punter on campus,’ so we found someone who used to play poker in Division I. Well, you never know.”
Pollock was a player on a scholarship to the University of Nevada during the 2020 season but later joined the NCAA transfer portal after losing the starting job to a transfer player. Pollock was ranked No. 13 in the nation for the 2020 recruit class. His announcement on the transfer portal indicated that he wanted to use his remaining five years of eligibility to play.
“First of all I want to thank Coach (Jay) Norvell, Coach (Matt) Mumme and Coach (Thomas) Sheffield for the opportunity to play football at the highest level here at the University of Nevada,” Pollock tweeted upon leaving Nevada. “I am also grateful to my teammates that I can now call them family. After speaking to my family and friends, it is in my best interest to enter the transfer portal with five years of eligibility remaining. Thank you Wolf Pack Nation!”
Pollock hails from Marietta, Georgia, deep in the heart of SEC country. It’s far from Nevada. On the other hand, Nevada is far from the SEC.
Ole Miss has finished in the top 25 preseason this year in both the Associated Press and Coaches’ Polls. The Rebels are ranked 21st in the AP Poll and 24th in the Coaches Poll. The Rebels play in the vaunted SEC West Division with Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
The Rebels are coming off a 10-3 season in which they went 6-2 in conference and a berth in the Sugar Bowl, where they lost to Baylor.
