“One of Us Lies” Season 2 Premiere Preview for the Peacock Series

One of us is lying goes where no Bayview High student has gone in Season 2: away from its source material.

In its first season, the Peacock teen mystery drama followed the central plot of the Karen M. McManus book on which it is based: Five students go to prison, but only four get out alive. The series took some creative liberties, developing new relationships that didn’t exist in the novel and throwing new twists into the mystery of who killed school-based gossip blogger Simon and why he built the show’s four cores. Despite these changes, it retained the same crime unit and many of the same mysteries. But season 2 (all eight episodes are streaming now) deviates completely from the second book, One of us is nextwhich jumps forward in time and shifts the focus to Bronwyn’s younger sister Maeve and a mostly new cast of characters.

“We really wanted to continue telling the story of the characters One of us is lying‘ explains showrunner Erica Saleh. “We wanted to continue telling the story that we had to tell in Season 1. Where they end up at the end of Season 1, just believing they can trust each other and starting to be honest about who they are, and then threatening everything with Jake’s death [and] someone [who] claiming to know what they did, that really just felt like the beginning of the story to us.”

Not having the books as a guide for season two was both “exciting and liberating,” but also “a little unnerving,” Saleh says, “given how much we know our fans love the books and love them characters and just wanted to make sure we really continue to deliver the heart of the characters Karen creates.”

One of Us Lies Season 2 PreviewGoing in a different direction left Saleh and the writers the responsibility of inventing a new Simon Says and their own mystery for Season 2, in which this time Murder Club did indeed engage in a murder, albeit in self-defense against a murderer.

“Everything in season 2 is going to be a little bit darker and a little bit more intense than what they went through in season 1,” shares Saleh. “So much of the mystery in Season 1 revolved around will they be able to prove their innocence and find out who killed Simon? Then season 2 is they going to be able to cover up this horrible thing they did and find out who is threatening them? Of course, that lends itself to a darker, spookier place this season.”

Amid all the darkness, viewers can expect “a lot of of romance,” because these are anxious, hormonal teenagers, after all. From opposites — Bronwyn and Nate to ex-partners Cooper and Kris to Maeve and Janae’s budding relationship — “there’s a lot of complications in these romances,” teases Saleh. “The question of who will make it as a couple is definitely a big one this season.”

One of Us Lies Season 2 VanessaSaleh is also looking forward to delving deeper into two of the above names, as well as a certain Murder Club foe. “One thing that’s really exciting is that we’re starting to develop some of the characters that we just got to know a little bit in Season 1,” says Saleh. “Everyone will get to know Maeve and Janae and Vanessa much better. And those are some arcs that I think will be really surprising and exciting for people.”
