Over $600,000 in donations come in after scary on-field collapse for NFL star Damar Hamlin’s fundraiser

The terrible collapse of Buffalo Bills security Damar Hamelin during a game with the Cincinnati Bengals shocked the sports world but Hamlin’s name will forever be used as his charity drive has seen a massive surge in donations.

The 24-year-old has used his fame and image to good effect since breaking into the professional scene with the Bills in 2021. Hamlin was the face of Chasing M’s Foundation Toy Drive, where 100 percent of donations go toward buying toys for children in need since 2020.

Starting with its roots in the pandemic, the fund continued into 2022 with its latest Instagram post sharing updates from last Christmas’ campaign. Since Hamlin’s premature collapse during the game on January 2nd, over $700,000 has been raised, truly exceeding the original goal of $2,500.

Hamlin is scheduled to breathe on assisted breathing and was rushed to a local hospital after nine minutes of CPR in the field. The general response to the donation on behalf of Hamlin’s charity has been heartwarming, especially at Christmas time.

However, the NFL’s handling of Hamlin’s collapse was far from heartwarming. Critics pointed to the organization’s shortcomings and their apparent disinterest in the welfare of the players, urging teams to return to the field just minutes after Hamlin’s collapse.

Fundraising is expected to reach $1 million if current donation rates continue.
