SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 01: Fernando Tatis Jr. #23 of the San Diego Padres hits a double in the top of the eighth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on October 01, 2021 in San Francisco, California.
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — The San Diego Padres say All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will likely need surgery for a broken left wrist and could be out for up to three months.
Tatis suffered the injury during the offseason, according to general manager AJ Preller.
The injury is a major blow to a team looking for a fresh start after a brutal late-season collapse that gave them another losing record.
Tatis, 23, suffered a series of injuries to his left shoulder last year while still leading the NL with 42 home runs and finishing third in the NL MVP poll.
