Paul Mescal wants to be cast in Top Gun: Maverick sequel

The Aftersun actor said he prefers to do indie films “for the rest of my life” rather than join anything at the MCU level.

Aside from Marvel, DC and Star Wars, Paul Mescal doesn’t have time for IP adaptations… except for Top Gun.

The ‘Aftersun’ actor and ‘Normal People’ breakout star has firmly cemented his request to join the ‘Top Gun’ cinematic universe.

“If I can keep making indie films for the rest of my life, I’ll be a happy man,” Mescal told People when asked which film franchise he wants to join. “Something like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ would be more interesting to me. I love this movie.”

Star Wars alum John Boyega similarly shut down speculation that he might join the MCU, saying, “I want to do nuanced things. I want to use my services to create original indie films with new, fresh ideas because I know that in this universe, it’s really hard to top Iron Man.”

And Mescal isn’t the only Hollywood star pondering the magic of Top Gun: Maverick. Quentin Tarantino said he “damn loves” the film and thought it was “a true cinematic extravaganza, the kind of thing I almost thought I wouldn’t see anymore.”

Bones and All director Luca Guadagnino also echoed the praise for the Top Gun sequel, starring Tom Cruise and Miles Teller.

“Top Gun: Maverick, a film that trades very heavily on nostalgia and repetition, comes with the novelty of what happened [35] Years later,” Guadagnino told Deadline. “The idea of a sequel coming after a quarter of a century is, in its own way, a very clever, intelligent and thoughtful way of doing business. Because now, even if the film evokes a very deep nostalgia in audiences – the nostalgic look of Tony Scott and the vision of the world as it was in 1986 – you are now there to experience Tom Cruise’s Maverick as a man. no boy. So I would say there are always opportunities to create something surprising and interesting.”

With the rise of ’80s movie sequels on the rise, including the highly anticipated Dirty Dancing sequel, the fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, and Mel Gibson’s Lethal Weapon 5 ” plus a “Roadhouse” remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, maybe Mescal gets his chance to star in the “Top Gun” trilogy.
