Pete Davidson felt like a loser when SNL poked fun at his personal life

“That was a really difficult thing,” Davidson said. “You feel small. You feel super insecure.”

Pete Davidson was not involved in the joke.

The ‘Saturday Night Live’ performer, who split from the live sketch comedy series in May 2022, reflected on how his high-profile dating life impacted his status on the famed NBC show. Davidson joined the cast in 2014, stepping in as a lead at the age of 20.

“If your own show [pokes fun at you]I’d sit in the back and watch the cold open up and – the cold open up [is] topical, political humor whatever is in the culture. And then you get made fun of,” Davidson said during Jon Berthnal’s Real Ones podcast (via People). “Then you have to go out there and next do a skit and hit your targets and the show just made fun of you. So why are they laughing at you? Like they just stalked you in front of everyone else. And you’re like, ‘I’m a fucking loser, man.’”

Davidson continued, “These are the people I’ve been with for almost a decade. I grew up in front of these people. You accompanied me in the most difficult time of my life and were there for me. And no one has ever shown me more latitude and grace than [‘SNL’ creator] Lorne Michaels and I owe this guy my life, but it was bloody confusing because the nature of entertainment is the nature of this business. At the end of the day, it is. That was a really difficult thing. you feel small You feel super insecure.”

Davidson continues his relationship with Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, the production company behind “SNL,” Davidson writes, executive producer and star of the new Meta Peacock series “Bupkis” under the banner.

The decision to focus the camera on a dramatized version of his own life was rooted in taking control of the narrative.

“All of a sudden you’re in this zeitgeist and it has nothing to do with work,” Davidson said of his tabloid-fuelled fame surrounding his A-list relationships. “And that’s a really shitty feeling. I was known before the work came, but I’ve always worked.”

Davidson shared, “I’m in my 20s and I’ve been dating people. And for some reason this is very crazy and interesting for people. I don’t think it’s interesting. I’ve been in show business almost half my life – 14 or 15 years and on a national TV show. In 12 years I’ve dated 10 people. I don’t think it’s that crazy, but it’s very interesting for some people. That was all anyone would talk about.”

He added: “I don’t bend, you know what I mean? And these people I dated I met at work. I was in nobody’s DMs, nobody was in mine. I’ve worked in one of the five Hollywood epicenters where you meet people and that’s how it happened.”

Davidson was previously engaged to Ariana Grande, appeared on the reality series The Kardashians as Kim Kardashian’s then-boyfriend, and is now linked to “Bupkis” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies” co-star Chase Sui Wonders.

“I’m cool with the joke,” Davidson summarized. “I get the late night jokes.”
