Plane Trailer: Gerard Butler stars in January action film

Butler assures, “Don’t worry, these plans are pretty much unbreakable,” as a plane speeds through the sky in the thriller, out January 13.

January is the time for cheesy horror movies (check out M3gan), extremely late-coming Oscar contenders (check out international feature hopes “Saint Omer” and “Close”) and, of course, ridiculous action thrillers, preferably starring Gerard Butler. And Lionsgate is more than happy to provide us with the latter via Plane, Butler’s latest action film. The studio released the final trailer for the film on Wednesday, a week before its theatrical release.

As the title suggests, the story of “Plane” begins on a plane piloted by Brodie Torrance (Butler) and carrying Louis Gaspare (“Evil” star Mike Colter), a man being extradited for murder . After the plane is severely damaged by a freak storm, Brodie is forced to make an emergency landing on Jolo, an island in the Philippines overrun by anti-government militias. When one of the militia, led by the short-tempered Dele (Yoson An), takes most of the crew and passengers hostage, Brodie is forced to free Louis and join forces with him to rescue everyone and flee the island.

Although the film is primarily a pure action thriller and the trailer emphasizes the intense action scenes pitting Butler and Colter against the militia, there’s a self-awareness here about the inherently goofy premise – much like the first trailer that captured the one showed -word title at the end as a somewhat comical revelation. This latest trailer features the slogan “Keep calm, try to survive” written on an airplane seatbelt placard and a memorable cut by Butler assuring passengers “No need to worry, these plans are made.” virtually indestructible,” followed by a shot of the plane hurtling through the sky and losing one of its wings.

Alongside Butler and Colter, Plane also stars Tony Goldwyn as a special forces officer trying to direct the rescue, with Daniella Pineda, Paul Ben-Victor, Remi Adeleke, Joey Slotnick, Evan Dane Taylor and Claro de los Reyes supporting roles.

The film is directed by Jean-Francois Richet, in his first American production since the 2005 remake of Assault on Precinct 13, starring Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne. The story of Plane was written by Charles Cumming, a British spy writer who co-wrote his first screenplay with JP Davis. Butler is producing the film along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Marc Butan and Alan Siegel.

Plane hits theaters on January 13th. Check out the final trailer below.
