CULVER CITY, Calif. (KABC) — A man suspected of domestic violence was pronounced dead early Sunday morning after a car chase in Culver City ended in an accident and police opened fire, authorities said.
According to a statement from the Culver City Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of College Avenue at approximately 12:15 a.m. regarding an incident “in which husband/suspect threatened wife/victim with a handgun.”
Officials located the suspect, who fled the area in a vehicle and prompted a police pursuit, the press release said. The suspect’s vehicle was disabled when it crashed into a median in the area of Culver Boulevard and Cardiff Avenue.
“The suspect fled the vehicle on foot after the collision,” as Culver City Police gave chase, the statement said. “Moments later, a shootout involving an officer broke out.”
A police spokesman said the suspect died at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.
The shooting was under investigation by the California Department of Justice, authorities said.
