‘Possibly Widespread’: Citgo gasoline from the Port of Tampa is contaminated with diesel, FDACS says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — If you filled up your car at a Citgo-delivered local gas station on Saturday, you may have been affected by a “potentially widespread” fuel spill.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said the contamination was human error at the Port of Tampa, which contaminated fuel for Citgo-served gas stations.

“Any fuel purchased after 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 26, from Citgo-servicing service stations located in the Port of Tampa has a high probability of being contaminated with diesel fuel,” reads an FDACS release. “At this time, Citgo will not publish the list of service stations that received contaminated fuel.”

According to the department, the Port of Tampa serves stations “in the greater Tampa area north of Chiefland and on the west side of Florida south of Naples.” These stations may include BJs, 7-Elevens and other unbranded stations.

Gas stations affected by the contamination have been asked to stop selling petrol until the fuel is replaced and the tanks cleaned.

If you have obtained fuel from these stations after the above period, it may have caused vehicles or generators to malfunction.

“FDEM is coordinating with petroleum traders, ports and all other stakeholders to ensure this disruption does not become widespread and residents have smooth access to fuel,” the press release said. “Upon direction from the governor, FDEM has already waived size, weight and hour restrictions in order to move resources into the state as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
