How to play Powerball
Powerball tickets, which cost $2 per game, are sold in 45 states, Washington, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Ticket holders each choose five numbers from one to 69 for the five white balls and one number from one to 26 for the Powerball. Players can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x by purchasing the Power Play option for an additional $1 per game. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at the Florida Lottery Drawing Studio in Tallahassee.
“There are nine ways to win a prize in Powerball. All prizes are fixed monetary amounts, with the exception of the grand prize. In California, payout amounts are pari-mutual and are determined by revenue and the number of winners,” explains the Powerball website. The Powerball jackpot value keeps growing until it is won. “The prize value of Match 5 + Power Play is always $2 million, while the 10x multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less,” according to the site. Jackpot winners can receive their prize either as an annuity or as a lump sum. Those who opt for the annuity option are guaranteed to receive 30 graduated payments over 29 years. Annual payments increase by 5 percent up to the 30th and final payment, the website says.
What are the chances of winning?
The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9 and the odds of winning are the same in every Powerball draw, according to the Powerball website. “Even if more tickets are sold in a given draw, your chances of winning are the same,” the website states.
