Prince Harry and Prince William appeared “overwhelmed with emotion” during Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, according to a body language expert. Both men showed subtle signs that the somber occasion made it difficult to keep a stiff upper body.
Expert examines Prince Harry and Prince William’s body language at Queen’s funeral
Body language expert Katia Loisel shared her thoughts on Harry and William’s gestures and facial expressions at the Queen’s funeral, telling SkyNews.com.au it was clear they were “overwhelmed with emotion”.
Loisel noted how the “massiveness” of Harry and William’s loss was put on display and that there was “no warmth between them” as they made little eye contact as they walked side by side behind the Queen’s coffin.
The body language expert noted that it would be easy to mistake the brothers’ facial expressions as a sign that their rift is far from over.
“Taken out of context, one could excuse mistaking the brother’s lack of mutual gaze and warmth as an indication of a widening rift,” Loisel explained.
“However, there was a distinct lack of socialization and eye contact among the royals during both the procession and ceremony, reflecting the formality and seriousness of the occasion,” she continued.
Loisel looked at how Kate Middleton offered “little to no” comfort to her children as an example. “While Princess Kate held Princess Charlotte’s hand upon entering the Abbey, even the children, given the nature of the occasion, received little to no reassurance and comfort during the service,” the expert noted.
“Rather, the royal family kept their gaze fixed forward or down at the floor for much of the service,” Loisel added.
Prince Harry and Prince William were “overwhelmed with emotion” at the Queen’s funeral, according to experts.
During the memorial service, Loisel pointed out how William and Harry “assumed a frozen expression, gaze fixed and forward or downward with lips pressed together.”
They also displayed some “calming behaviors” to calm themselves in the face of “the magnitude of their loss,” including rocking back and forth.
“There were several moments when both Prince Harry and Prince William were overcome with emotion,” Loisel explained. “Their faces filled with sorrow, their eyebrows raised and contracted, upper lids drooped, eyes downcast, their rapid blinks holding back tears.”
Prince Harry showed remorse and sadness at the funeral
Body language expert Judi James gave a glimpse of how Harry showed a hint of regret in a look he gave William.
“During the service he dabbed tears and tended to look around a lot and there were at least two occasions when his gaze, which was more of a stare, seemed to be directed at William,” James told The Sun.
“His facial expression suggested sadness and possible regret,” she explained.
James added that Harry put on an “emotional display” as they prepared to go behind the coffin after the service. “He stood in line and watched, like the brother he had once been so close to; the nephew he loved to play with and the sister-in-law he thought of as his own sister, walking in front of him without a glance in his direction.”
James continued, “His face seemed to contort into a more intense sign of sadness and his lips tightened again.”
