After nine seasons The real housewives of Atlanta, Porsha Williams left the show amid her messy engagement to her former co-star’s ex-husband. When viewers first met Williams, she was a dedicated homemaker and full-time stepmom. In her second season, her life was completely different and she blossomed into a successful businesswoman in later seasons. Due to the portrayal of her difficult transition, a former show producer says Williams is the breakout star of the reality series.
Porsha Williams was nearly fired from the show after her debut season
Williams joined the show in Season 5, presenting her traditional housewife lifestyle to her then-husband, NBA legend Kordell Stewart. It was clear that Williams no longer wanted her primary focus to be on her marriage and home, but Stewart refused to accept her desired changes. Through the reunion special, their marriage was seemingly on life support, and Stewart chose not to take part in the recording.
News that Stewart was filing for divorce hit the blogosphere just days after the reunion was filmed. Cohen says a tearful speech Williams gave about her dedication to Stewart and their marriage was the change he needed to keep her as a performer.
“There was a pretty healthy dialogue between the producers about whether Porsha would come back at this point,” Cohen told Jenny McCarthy on her podcast. “She was up there at that reunion, and I watched her, and [when] I left, I thought I’d stand for Porsha. That was incredible and she cemented her place on the show.”
At first he was unsure if she would return. But the goodbye speech changed everything. “I totally underestimated this woman and look where she is on the show now,” he added.
Producer Carlos King fought to have her on the show
As the producers debated whether or not to have Williams back for another season, they also needed a new executive producer. King served as associate producer and supervising producer for the first four seasons before going on hiatus.
He left the show after season 4. The network approached him about returning as an EP. He explained on his reality with the king Podcast that it was known behind the scenes that Williams wasn’t a producers’ favorite. King explained:
I enjoyed Porsha in her first season…and I remember talking to producers because when I was talking about doing Nene Leake’s wedding special and preparing for it, they asked me if I could be at the season 5 reunion .Season could help… I was there for it and I remember talking to the executives and saying, “Oh, I love Porsha.” Because there were talks about whether Porsha should come back or not. And I said, ‘Hey, as someone who hasn’t worked on Season 5, and I’ve actually watched the season, so I’m on the outside looking in, I think Porsha is just getting started. I don’t think Porsha has really shown everything she is and I’m intrigued by Porsha and I really think we should all give Porsha a chance.”
He explains why she’s a breakout star of the show
Williams was retained and the following season chronicled her divorce from Stewart. It was King’s decision to show more personal stories of the cast and their marriages, rather than just focus on their minor drama together. King says Williams was the breakout star because she was so vulnerable going through such a public divorce.
“The fact that she went through this very tumultuous divorce at a very bad time in her life and it was real. And that’s what it was about. I kept telling the producers, ‘Honey, follow Porsha wherever she goes because we’re following a woman going through this divorce into a public figure and we need to see that,'” he explained. “Porsha shot more scenes than anyone because Porsha unraveled right in front of our eyes, and because Porsha was so awesome, she allowed us to document every step of the way.”
