Proponents call for changes in the STAAR test

A new report is asking Texas lawmakers to de-emphasize the STAAR test and consider other things when measuring student and school success.

AUSTIN, Texas — A group of advocates is asking Texas lawmakers not to use the STAAR test as the sole source of measuring student and school success.

“At the junior high and elementary level, the ‘A’ through ‘F’ rating is 100% based on STAAR,” said Bob Popinski, Raise your hand Texas Senior Director of Policy.

Popinski said the grade a school gets shouldn’t be based solely on a standardized test, and whether a student advances to the next grade shouldn’t be determined by the score on the exam.

“This does not give a complete picture of individual performance and growth,” Popinski said.

Measure What Matters Assessment and Accountability Council, an impartial group of education leaders and policy makers Raise your hand Texas released a report after receiving feedback from more than 15,000 parents on the STAAR test. Many believe that schools should consider other factors when determining a student’s success.

“Attended Pre-K,” Popinski said. “Access to fine arts, access to a language, whether your children are on time and on track to graduate high school on time.”

These are all factors that measure what’s going on in the classroom and can more accurately tell whether a student is engaged, he said.

Raise your hand Texas By not relying solely on the STAAR to measure academic progress, an enormous burden could be taken off students. It will also give teachers more freedom.

“It will return the gift of time to our teachers,” Popinski said.

Popinski said the next step is to present the report in the next legislature.
