In a surprising turn of events, Sony has quietly rolled out a brand new system firmware update to PS3 consoles around the world. The May 10 update now brings the console to version 4.89, with some questionable changes.
Although the console is now 16 years old, it’s still an incredible piece of hardware that many gamers continue to use to this day. With classic titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, skate 3classic call of Duty titles and more all available on PS3, it’s no wonder fans are still in love with the console.
But it wasn’t just the PS3 that received a surprise update. If you’re one of the few gamers who still use and love the PSVita, a new system firmware update is also available. For Vita users, today’s update brings the handheld device to version 3.74 and includes the same changes as the PS3 update.

PS3 system firmware update 4.89 (May 10) details
Sony has yet to confirm the release of the latest PS3 and PSVita update on one of its social media channels, but there are a few details taken straight from the console. As noted by a user on the PSNProfiles forums, today’s update reportedly includes the following changes across both consoles:
“A device password is now required to sign in to PlayStation Network for improved account protection. PlayStation Network account creation and some account management features are no longer available on the console. Use your PC or mobile browser to use account management features with improved performance, speed, and security“.
Many users have not taken the update too well, and players are frustrated with the change. Essentially, following the release of PS3 update 4.89 and Vita update 3.74, players are no longer able to create a new account directly from the PS3 or PSVita.
You can continue to use your existing account, but attempting to set up a new account will require using a PC or mobile browser.
As mentioned, we’re still waiting for an announcement from Sony. We’ll update this article with more details as they become known, so stay tuned.
