Putin mobilizes medically, mentally ‘unfit’ troops to Ukraine: General

Retired US Army General Jack Keane on Thursday criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin’s partial mobilization efforts, saying some of the reservists the Russian military has called up are medically and mentally “unfit”.

Keane’s comments came after Putin announced Russia’s first partial mobilization since World War II, which Russian officials say means the country’s military could call up as many as 300,000 reservists for the war in Ukraine.

In an interview on Fox News, where Keane is an analyst, the retired general was asked if it would be possible for Putin to bring the additional troops onto the battlefield.

“The extreme right is pushing him to take more action, they want full mobilization. He knows that would be a disaster. He can’t get there politically right now because of the opposition,” Keane said.

“We wouldn’t even see them on the battlefield for three or four months, and then when they get on the battlefield some of them are medically unfit, some of them are physically unfit, a lot of them are mentally unfit in the sense that they really are don’t want to be there. And then they will join a force that has already shown a significant level of incompetence, I don’t think they will be decisive,” added the retired general.

news week asked the defense ministries of Russia and Ukraine for their opinion.

In conversation with news week This week, Sean McFate, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and an associate professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, called Putin’s move to partially mobilize the country an “act of desperation.”

“He emptied all the jails and used up all the mercenaries, and now he’s going to turn to core Russia,” McFate said.

Last week, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian billionaire who the US government says is the manager of the Wagner Military Group, an elite paramilitary force that has sent mercenaries to Ukraine, reportedly hatched a plan for Russian prisoners of war.

So said Mikhail Kasyanov, a former Russian prime minister news week in an interview published Thursday that he believes Putin’s partial mobilization call will lead to his downfall.

“His decision means that even those who were neutral or generally supportive of Putin will start to reconsider their stance because they are now forced to go to a war they previously observed,” Kasyanov said.
