Putin vows to destroy US Patriot missile defense systems in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to destroy the Patriot missile defense systems if the US honors its pledge to deliver them to Ukraine.

In an interview aired on the state-controlled Rossiya-1 TV channel on Christmas Day, Putin vowed to destroy the anti-missile system, which can effectively destroy incoming targets.

During an interview with state-recognized journalist Pavel Zarubin, Putin said he had been assured that Ukraine “didn’t have any such complexes yet” and claimed that Russia would destroy the systems.

“Of course we will click 100 percent,” Putin said, according to the Russian state media company TASS.

The Patriot Missle Defense System is a key part of the $1.85 billion security assistance package the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

According to Reuters, the Patriot – which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target – is considered one of the most advanced defense systems in the US arsenal.

The system uses powerful radar and has a range of about 93 miles and can intercept incoming missiles.

Patriot systems could target ballistic missiles, planes and drones that Russia sends to destroy or damage Ukraine’s infrastructure.

Retired US General Mark Hertling expressed concern about the timeline for sharing the missile system when speaking to CNN, saying it would take “months” of training to get the most out of it.

He added that the missile defense system is not capable of defending all of Ukraine.

Hertling said: “These systems do not move on the battlefield. You place them in a location where your most strategic objective will be defended, e.g. B. in a city like Kyiv.

“If anyone thinks this is going to be a system that stretches across a 500-mile border between Ukraine and Russia, they just don’t know how the system works.”

On Thursday, Putin said the aid package to Ukraine would “prolong” the conflict in Eastern Europe and claimed the Patriot missile system was “pretty old”.

news week has asked the Kremlin for comment.

Russia downplayed Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent visit to Washington DC Zelensky delivered a historic address to US lawmakers in the US Capitol that led to the announcement of the $1.85 billion package.

The Ukrainian leader told Congress Ukraine “will never surrender” and stressed the strong ties between the US and his country.

Zelenskyy has sought to secure more arms from the US as it continues its counteroffensive to regain territory lost to Russia in the early stages of the war.
