The sci-fi sequel was a hit on both TV and Peacock.
Quantum Leap just fast forwarded to Season 2. NBC has renewed its new Quantum Leap, the revival of the ’90s sci-fi series, for a second season.
This “quantum leap” in which Raymond Lee as Dr. Starring Ben Song was a strong performance for both NBC and Peacock, where the episodes will air the next day. Thirty years later, in Quantum Leap (2022), Song revisits the work of Scott Bakula’s main character, Dr. Sam Beckett – and his time travel adventures.
Quantum Leap airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC following The Voice. Currently, “Leap” is on winter hiatus and returns on January 2 (“The Voice” airs its two-part season finale tonight and tomorrow night.) To date, the pilot episode “Quantum Leap” has amassed more than 10 million viewers on the broadcast network and NBCUniversal’s streaming service. That’s pretty good these days, but executives will love going back to the 1989 Nielsen rating sheets.
“We’re jumping into a second season thanks to the incredible work of our cast, producers, writers and everyone who helped bring new life to this iconic NBC series,” said Lisa Katz, president of Scripted Content at NBCUniversal Television and stream. “As we continue to bring audiences to our must-watch dramas, it’s gratifying to know that ‘Quantum Leap’ will have a prominent place next season on both our NBC schedule and next-day Peacock.”
IndieWire’s Steve Greene praised the pilot in September for trusting the original Quantum Leap’s sci-fi procedural formula and not doing much to update it. Leap has its hero jump to any hot moment in the story, using pop hits of the day and other set dressings to navigate his imagination. In the eight episodes so far, Dr. Song has traveled to Las Vegas in the 1970’s, to San Francisco in 1989 before the historic earthquake and back to the western days of 1879.
In addition to Lee, the series also stars Ernie Hudson, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park and Nanrisa Lee. Martin Gero serves as executive producer along with Dean Georgaris, Don Bellisario, Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer, Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt.
Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces in association with I Have an Idea! Entertainment, Belisarius Productions and Quinn’s House Productions.
