Race for Los Angeles Mayor: New ads from the Los Angeles Police Protective League continue to target Congresswoman Karen Bass

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — California primary day is just two weeks away as of Tuesday, and big bucks are being spent in the Los Angeles mayoral race trying to get your vote.

Some of that money comes from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union that represents LA police officers, and is specifically targeting Congresswoman Karen Bass, a candidate for mayor.

The union has backed developer Rick Caruso, who is also running for mayor, and they’ve since gone on the air with two TV ads, including a new ad along with a website blowing up Bass over a lack of votes in Congress.

“If you’re absent and don’t show up for the vote, how are you going to fix things that are going on in Los Angeles?” asked Jerretta Sandoz, LAPPL vice president. “We want someone who will crack down on crime because crime is out of control. Gun violence, totally out of control. Murders are afoot. Our city is dirty. Homelessness everywhere think it’s Karen Bass.”

So far, LAPPL has spent nearly $3.5 million on its anti-Karen Bass campaign, which includes two TV spots and email marketing.

The campaign is funded by contributions from the League’s nearly 10,000 member organisations.

“This is our money that we use,” Sandoz said. “Rick Caruso didn’t donate a penny to the union.”

Caruso is a former Police Commission President and is popular with the Los Angeles Police Department. He called for 1,500 more officers during his campaign.

“The one thing good cops don’t want is a bad cop, so Rick Caruso will hold officers accountable and his track record shows he can reduce crime and that’s what we need now,” Sandoz said .

In a statement, Bass’s campaign hit back, saying, “The Police Protective League spent $4 million lying about Congressmen Bass’ record as they invest in improving police-community relations and recruiting new officers.” should. It’s a waste of money and it’s not good for Los Angeles. Congressman Bass cast more than 18,000 votes in Congress while Rick Caruso neglected his duty to keep people safe by canceling 40% of his Police Commission meetings.”
