Week 15 in the NFL concludes tonight in a battle between two of the season’s most disappointing teams as reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams (4-9, 1-4 away) take on the Green Bay Packers (5-8, 3- 3 home) at Lambeau Field.
Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. EST on ESPN.
Rams vs Packers odds
Generally, the point spread between the Rams and Packers is listed at Green Bay -7. Most books have odds of -110 either way, although Caesars Sportsbook currently lists Rams +7 at +100.
The total number is also constant at 39.5. The only major book to shadow the juice either way is FanDuel, which lists the over at -105 and the under at -115.
The NFL odds show some significant differences in the Rams vs. Packers money line. Los Angeles is as short as +240 (BetMGM) and as long as +265 (FanDuel). Conversely, the heavily favored Packers are -330 on FanDuel and -303 on BetMGM.
LA Rams betting trends
Many of the fights in LA this year (although certainly not all) can be attributed to injuries. QB’s Matthew Stafford, WR1’s Cooper Kupp, running back Cam Akers and defensive tackle Aaron Donald (the three-time Defensive Player of the Year) have all missed significant time, and the Rams’ injury iceberg goes even deeper.
Stafford, Kupp and Donald remain sidelined, and Kupp is likely done for the season. With Stafford’s backup, John Wolford, also injured, the team took over ahead of last week’s home game against Las Vegas Baker Mayfield.
The long-time Brown (and short-term Panther) played well overall in his first start. with extremely With limited time to learn a new playbook, Mayfield went 22-35 for 230 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in a stunning 17-16 comeback win. Not only were Mayfield and the Rams trailing 13-3 at halftime, they were down 16-3 with less than four minutes left.
Mayfield capped the comeback with a 24-yard TD pass to Van Jefferson with just ten seconds left.
The win sparked a brutal six-game losing streak for the Rams, who had at least managed to stay at .500 in their first half-dozen games of the season.
As the Raiders’ seven-point home underdogs, the Rams covered their second straight game in Week 14 (after a 23-17 setback against the Seahawks as 6.5-point dogs). But their ATS record still stands at a dismal 4-7-2 in a season where they were expected to put up a decent challenge to repeat.
With their offense stuttering most of the year, LA are down 5-8 in their first 13 games, though they’ve split their last eight evenly (4-4) as oddsmakers adjusted to the reality of this losing season.
The defense mostly helped. The Rams rank 13th in the league in total yards allowed and are still the fifth-best defense, according to ProFootballFocus.
Packer Betting Trends
Green Bay’s horrible season was less about injuries and more about roster building and subpar QB play. Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers is in many ways having the worst season of his legendary career. Since becoming the starter in 2008, Rodgers has never had a passer rating or QBR lower than his ratings that year (92.4 and 41.0, respectively). His nine interceptions are already more than he has thrown in a single season since 2010.
To his credit, he doesn’t work with the most talented reception corps. His leading receiver, Allen Lazard, already has a career-high 620 yards. Christian Watson (a 2022 runner-up from North Dakota State) and undrafted tight end Robert Tonyan round out his top 3 goals this season.
The Packers are coming off one of their better games of the season, a 28-19 comeback win over arch-rivals Chicago, but it’s hard to be encouraged by their performance. Trailing 3:16 at halftime, Green Bay was down by a wide margin (409 to 357) and only managed to make their comeback in the fourth quarter on turnovers and a missed field goal.
Even after covering against the Bears as 3.5-point street favorites, the Packers are only 5-8 ATS on the year. Their over/under mark is 7-6, making them one of only ten teams in the league to have more overs than unders this season with relatively few points.
Rams versus Packers pick
It’s not every week that bettors see an NFL total in the 30’s. Oddsmen are anticipating another sluggish, dare I say unwatched, primetime affair. So it’s a bit incongruous to see the spread still sitting on a full touchdown.
The Packer defense is giving up more yards per game (347.7 vs. 330.5) and more points per game (23.2 vs. 22.8) than its Rams counterpart. While Green Bay’s offense certainly has more potential to score points, trusting Rodgers has become almost impossible this year.
Even with Donald on the shelf, there’s still more than enough talent on the LA defense to keep this game competitive.
