Recall Alert | Target, CPSC recalls Pillowfort children’s weighted blankets after 2 girls were trapped and died of asphyxiation in NC

Target is recalling a children’s weighted blanket sold in its stores and online after two NC children died and two others were trapped while using the product.

The US Commission on Consumer Product Safety announced the recall on Thursday for the PIllowfort weighted blanket, stating that children can become trapped if they unzip and enter the blanket, creating a risk of suffocation.

In April, a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old girl reportedly became trapped in the blanket of Pillowfort weighted blankets and died of asphyxiation at Camp Lejeune, the CPSC said.

The commission stated that there were two other reports of children being trapped in the product that did not result in death.

“There is a zippered component that acts like a duvet cover, where you can zip up and down the cover of the weighted blanket. This is a problem for very young children who could unzip and get inside and choke,” said Doctor Daniel Park, medical director of the pediatric emergency department at UNC Health. “Unfortunately, that was the mechanism by which these two children died in North Carolina.”

dr Park says another issue is the weight of the blanket.

“Some of these weighted blankets are quite heavy relative to the body weight of some very young children, and that in itself could pose a hazard,” he said.

While weighted blankets come with risks, says Dr. Park that there are benefits.

“Adults and teenagers should be perfectly fine with the weighted blankets and some benefits of weighted blankets have been shown, particularly for sensory disorders or patients with autism, so there are certainly benefits, but for young children they haven’t shown any kind of.” significant advantage that we are aware of and now we are seeing several tragedies with it,” adds Dr. Park.

Target sold about 204,000 of the $40 blankets from December 2018 to September 2022, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The ID numbers of the affected blankets, which can be found on the fabric tag, are: 097-02-0140 (Unicorn – White), 097-02-0148 (Space Navy), 097-02-0361 (Pink), 097- 02-0363 (Blue), 097-02-0364 (Grey), 097-02-1603 (Buffalo Plaid – Red), 097-02-3904 (Blue Constellation) and 097-02-3905 (Unicorn – Pink).
