If you were between the ages of 12 and 35 in the 1990s, you probably had a pair of Reef sandals on your feet for most of the summer. And if you live near a beach and care in the least about being cool and comfortable, I’ll up the odds from decent to almost certain. Reef has actually been around since the mid-’80s, but the company came into its own around the same time that “Cotton Eye Joe” and “Gangsta’s Paradise” were lighting up the airwaves and Dumb and Dumber And Water world killed it at the box office. (Well, don’t Water world, actually, if we include the cost of production.)

For the first ten years that Reef made shoes, it was all about comfortable, durable and stylish sandals suitable for the beach or the city. The company first introduced a closed-toe shoe back in 1996, but the style remained sandal-centric—and male-centric, by the way.

It wasn’t until 1999 that Reef released shoes for women. In 2005, Reef added a sandal with a bottom built-in bottle opener, because of course that had to be a thing.

In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Reef began incorporating much more environmentally friendly and sustainable materials and practices into its products. The company soon offered more children’s shoes and also formed partnerships with all sorts of great organizations such as the Surfrider Better Beach Alliance and PFLAG. In other words, Reef grew up. And now, here in 2023, they have more than achieved that status. Because while you can still find plenty of excellent sandals at Reef, if you think of this company as a sandal brand, they are sold way too short today.

Today Reef offers sandals, slippers, shoes, boots and more. The sandals come in all sorts of styles, from classic leather straps to mules to flip-flops lined with artificial grass (see below!). The women’s line is mature, including shoes, clogs, casual flip-flops, stylish sandals and more.

The one thing that ties together all the many styles of Reef shoes on offer today? They’re all super comfortable, from shoes that look great under khakis or a leisure suit, to the most casual thong imaginable, they all feel great on your feet.
