Breathe in the clear black night through the flickering fireplace light, chin deep in illuminated bubbles, ears pricked for the nocturnal murmur of wildlife, we are one with nature while soothing jets massage away the week’s stress.
Rising with the lark my husband and I will be back out here by daybreak enjoying the glorious hot tub and boundless rural beauty of Landal’s newest park, Rockingham Forest.
Bordering ancient woodland and set on the site of the former RAF Kings Cliffe airfield, our luxurious retreat nestles in rolling Northamptonshire countryside, steeped in beauty and steeped in history – the perfect choice for a family holiday with two teenage children and grandparents in tow .
With a choice of five star lodges for up to six guests, many with outdoor jacuzzis and all with their own unique character and charm, Rockingham Forest is an idyllic base from which to explore the area’s glorious countryside, unrivaled views and miles for Mile to enjoy of unspoilt natural beauty.
Our accommodation is The Wansford, a spacious three bedroom lodge furnished to the highest standard complete with two super king size beds and one twin bedroom all with wide screen TV and ensuite shower room.
Inviting and spotlessly clean with a blend of essential home comforts and indulgent luxury, the lodge offers a wine cooler, coffee maker, washer-dryer, dishwasher and built-in Bluetooth speakers, as well as a large sociable kitchen and open plan lounge with patio doors to patio with seating, BBQ stand and a six-person hot tub, just perfect for socializing under the stars.
Whether you bike, run or hike, exploring comes first and with so much to see, do and enjoy, just grab your camera, put on your helmet, hiking or running shoes and choose your own adventures.
With guests of all ages making up our party, we split up to enjoy various activities during the day before meeting up again each evening to swap stories over a hearty meal in the coziness of our cozy woodland oasis.
Avid golfers, our teenage children made their way straight to the fairways of Orton Meadows and enjoyed a round in the scenic, informal surroundings of the 18 hole course, which is only a 20 minute drive away.
In search of exquisite scenery, my husband and I explored on foot and soaked up the park’s vast landscape, where we were surprised to find a memorial to the famous Major Glenn Miller, who staged his last hangar concert at the former RAF in October 1944 base before his mysterious disappearance across the English Channel in December this year.
My parents, meanwhile, got their picnic lunch and water bottle ready for a piece of history at nearby Rockingham Castle, built on the orders of William the Conqueror and serving as a royal residence for 450 years.
Charmed by the distinctive architecture of the Tudor building, they snapped some excellent photos from the Castle’s impressive pinnacle, spanning five counties.
Stroll around the lakes at nearby Barnwell Country Park, marvel at the big cats at Hamerton Zoo Park or take a scenic stroll through the beautiful cathedral city of Peterborough, just a 15-minute drive away, and it’s easy to personalize your stay to be designed in Rockingham Forest to be as captivating or relaxing as you choose.
In fact, when it’s time for you, just settle into your bathrobe and slippers and enjoy a glass of wine while the hot tub comes to life and a lone tawny owl sings the onset of twilight.
A three day break at Landal Rockingham Forest in The Wansford for six people costs from £579. For more information visit Landal or 0345 498 6200. With 80 locations across Europe in eight countries, Landal offers a wide range of parks to suit every holiday experience.
