Republican Larry Hogan Tears Up GOP Reps Who Want to ‘Exonerate’ FBI: ‘Absurd’

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, on Sunday slammed fellow GOP congressmen who called for the FBI to “defund” following Monday’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican and staunch Trump loyalist, last week called for federal law enforcement to be defunded and even began selling shirts and hats that read “Defund the FBI.” Rep. Jeff Duncan, a Republican from South Carolina, also floated the idea of abolishing the FBI in a Twitter post Monday. Meanwhile, a number of other GOP lawmakers have attacked the FBI, accusing the agency of corruption and political bias.

“First we had the left talking about defunding the police and attacking cops, and now we have these federal law enforcement officers,” Hogan said in an interview with ABC News. In this week. “And it’s absurd.”

The Republican governor said such calls were “dangerous,” adding that “there are threats everywhere,” and warned that “losing confidence in our federal law enforcement officials and our judicial system … is a really serious issue.”

Many left-wing activists supporting the Black Lives Matter and Antifa movements called for the police to be defunded or abolished during the massive nationwide protests following the May 2020 killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. Some progressive Democratic lawmakers have voiced support for these calls, but party leaders dismissed the slogans while centrist Democrats pushed for increased funding for the police.

news week has reached out to Greene and Duncan press representatives for comment.

The FBI, with the approval of Attorney General Merrick Garland, conducted the raid on Trump’s resort town of Mar-a-Lago, searching for top-secret and sensitive individual information and other classified documents. Trump and his allies have condemned the crackdown, with the ex-president calling it part of a “hoax” and an ongoing “witch hunt” against him.

“The FBI has proven time and again that it is corrupt through and through. At what point do we abolish the FBI and start over?” Duncan wrote in a Monday tweet.

“We must defund the FBI, dismantle the DOJ, and rid the agencies of political prejudice and persecution,” Greene wrote in a Twitter post Thursday. “I believe in people.”

Notably, the congresswoman’s post retweeted the sentiments of leftist podcaster Briahna Joy Gray, who previously served as press secretary for progressive Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2020 Democratic presidential campaign.

“Marjorie Taylor Greene is right about the FBI, malicious or not,” Gray wrote. She added that “the left should take advantage of the right’s new recognition of systemic bias and push to abolish the FBI — an institution that has always protected the power of the elite, not the people.”

While many Republicans claim the FBI acted politically biased, the federal agency is currently run by a Trump appointee. FBI Director Christopher Wray, a Republican, was selected by the former President in 2017 after he fired former Director James Comey.

It was first revealed in early February that the former president had illegally brought classified documents to his Florida home, with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) confirming it had searched for 15 boxes of records. The ex-president didn’t deny the story at the time and said there was a mix-up when his staff rushed him out of the White House.

After the boxes were returned to NARA, the collection raised additional concerns that the former president still had additional classified material. Federal investigators began questioning Trump associates to determine what had been stolen from the White House. The interviews and a wider investigation led by a US attorney led to a grand jury subpoena against Trump in late May to produce certain documents.

When the documents weren’t turned over, the FBI and Justice Department decided to take the unprecedented step of executing a search warrant on a former president. A federal judge approved the warrant, as required by due process, on the assumption that the FBI had established probable cause. The warrant, which was unsealed on Friday, was aimed at obtaining top-secret and other classified documents.

Trump has described the FBI raid as part of a “scam” and “witch hunt” aimed at him.

“Like all the other hoaxes and scams they have used to attempt to silence the voice of a vast majority of the American people, I have the TRUTH on my side, and when you have the TRUTH, you will ultimately be victorious!” he wrote on Truth Social on Saturday.
