Rian Johnson cooks up the sneaky “Glass Onion” cameo that he hopes no one will notice

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will soon be making its debut on Netflix after impressing critics and viewers who watched it during its brief theatrical run. The sequel follows Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc as he tackles an all-new case, replacing the previous film’s massive cast with Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe and Kathryn Hahn.

Johnson has also confirmed that there will be another familiar face knife out ride, though he hopes most viewers won’t know he’s back. This is Noah Segan, who played one of the cops in the opener and has starred in every Johnson film since his high school neo-noir breakout brick.

Speaking to Screen Rant about Segan’s return, Johnson said he wasn’t worried audiences would be confused by his presence:

“[Noah Segan, who plays Derol] is one of my best friends. He’s been in every movie I’ve ever done. And I wonder if people will recognize him knife outbecause he was one of the cops knife out. When I thought, “Yeah, we’re just going to use Noah as a different character.” My producer said, “People will recognize him.” I say, “I don’t think they will.”

The fact that Segan is in every Johnson film also means he made it war of stars over the last jedi, where he plays X-wing pilot Stomeroni Starck. Unfortunately, all plans for Segan to capitalize on this in future adventures in a galaxy far, far away were cut short when Kylo Ren’s ship opened fire on Leias and Starck was killed in the explosion. Still, if Johnson ever returns war of stars for his long-delayed trilogy, we’d expect him to appear there as well.

glass onion is shaping up to be one of the biggest streaming releases of the holiday season, with its tropical crime thriller the perfect antidote to endless dingy, celebratory movies about goodwill and whatnot. With that out of the way, Johnson has started working on it knife out 3expected to hit Netflix in 2024, with another impressive cast and a new mystery for Blanc to solve.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will land on Netflix on December 23.
