Before Ringo Starr became a musician and the perfect drummer for the Beatles, he was just a working-class kid from Liverpool, England. His interest in playing drums developed in his youth. But before Ringo helped create some of the most popular music of all time, he worked a series of blue-collar jobs in Liverpool. Ringo lied about a job he had so he could meet girls, but he was fired for showing up drunk and swearing at his boss.
Ringo’s interest in drumming developed during one of his many hospital stays
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has rekindled Ringo’s fear of hospitals. And he has every reason to fear her. Between a ruptured appendix and peritonitis (an infection of the stomach lining) as a young child and a nearly two-year bout of tuberculosis as a teenager, Ringo spent more time in hospitals than most children his age.
The silver lining to his TB recovery was that hospital staff let patients play percussion instruments during their stay. Access to drums helped nurture his passion for the instrument. It was several years before Ringo started playing professionally, but being hospitalized for tuberculosis helped expand his passion for drums.
After leaving the hospital but before making a living out of music, the former Richard Starkey worked several blue-collar jobs. Ringo lied about a job to meet girls but was soon fired for drunkenly swearing at his boss.

TIED TOGETHER: Ringo Starr gave George Harrison’s wife a job after seeing how bad their marriage had become
Ringo missed so much school recovering from TB that he quit instead of trying to catch up on the missed work. Instead he went to work. As Michael Seth Starr (no relationship) writes in the bio With a little help, Ringo got his first job as a messenger at British Railways. This job only lasted a few weeks.
Ringo lied about the work he did at his second job to meet girls. He was bartender on a pleasure boat that sailed from Liverpool to North Wales and back, but he told the girls in the bar he was in the Navy. However, this job only lasted a few weeks.
“One night a week we all had to stay on board, so we all felt like real seafarers,” recalled Ringo With a little help. “I ended up wanting to be in the real merchant marine. It was great for picking up girls. Well, it wasn’t great, but it helped. You would go to a pub: “What are you doing?” ‘I’m in the Navy.’ ‘Oh yeah? When did you come back?’ ‘I just got back.’ ‘When did you go away?’ ‘Ten o’clock this morning.’”
Starr writes that Ringo’s time sailing back and forth from Liverpool to Wales ended six weeks after it began. He showed up at work drunk after a late night party and spoke to his boss.

TIED TOGETHER: Ringo Starr’s drumming skills are even more impressive because of 1 fact about him
After being fired from a bar waitress on the boat, Ringo got an apprenticeship as a gymnastics equipment maker. But there was only one job that suited Ringo Starr – being a drummer for the Beatles.
He was in another band that played in Hamburg (one whose smart pink suits got them better rooms than the Beatles). One fateful day, Fab Four manager Brian Epstein asked him to sing with the band. The sit-in was a success, the Beatles ditched their first drummer and added Ringo, and the rest is history.
Ringo’s impressive skills as a drummer anchored the band that changed music forever. Though he wasn’t always appreciated – by producer George Martin or his bandmates – Ringo entered a hall of fame other Beatles never got to enter. Best of all? Ringo didn’t have to lie about his work – his talent was clear as day.
