Robert Pattinson curates Sotheby’s Exhibit in New York

Robert Pattinson has curated a collection suited to Bruce Wayne.

The Batman actor collaborated with Sotheby’s on an exhibition for the Contemporary Curated program, which runs September 23-29 at Sotheby’s New York. A live auction will conclude the exhibition on September 30th.

Pattinson chose six works by artists including Willem de Kooning, Richard Serra and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. According to Artnet, the estimated values for the works range from $100,000 to $2.5 million. Pattinson, described by a Page Six source as a “passionate art collector,” had previously auctioned off one of his own sketches for charity in 2017.

“What I’m looking for is when a piece has its own language,” Pattinson said in a press release about his curation strategy, notably applauding artist Julie Mehretu’s depictions of “grandness and richness” in her Untitled ink drawing.

“It doesn’t necessarily feel like it just exists for its own sake and has a presence that buzzes with aliveness,” Pattinson said. “It has the ability to communicate with you on some kind of primal level. I waver between things that feel very deep, cosmic and alien. Then, on the other hand, I also like subversive, naughty, slightly dangerous stuff.”

The collection also included a bronze and California redwood Thomas Houseago sculpture, which fetched $80,000 at auction, and Genieve Figgis’ “Kissing by the Window,” estimated to be worth between $30,000 and $40,000.

“Curating this group of paintings has been a really exciting process and an honor for me,” continued the Twilight graduate. “Acting has made me realize that there is a connection between all art forms and it has made the process of curating the sale a fascinating and enjoyable experience for me.”

Pattinson concluded with advice to collectors, saying, “Only acquire pieces that you will love, no matter what.” Just having something that you will keep for the rest of your life is probably the best idea.”

Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated program has attracted celebrity guest curators since 2013, including Oprah Winfrey, DJ Steve Aoki, designer Margherita Missoni and musician Skepta among former curators.

Oscar winner Brad Pitt recently opened his own exhibition at the Sara Hildén Art Museum in Finland. The ‘Bullet Train’ star unveiled nine sculptures as part of a larger exhibition by British artist Thomas Houseago and a series of ceramics by Australian musician Nick Cave.
