Running for Fun: What is Carb Loading and How to Do It?

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – On this week’s episode of Run for Fun, we learn about carb loading. Leigh Spann and Coach Maria explain what this actually means and how to effectively add carbohydrates to your diet to fuel your race.

While many people limit the amount of carbohydrates they consume, long-distance runners need additional carbohydrates to use their muscles for longer periods of time.

Trainer Maria discusses glycogen levels in your muscles, how to build them, and what happens when you completely deplete them.

Not all carbohydrates are created equal. Leigh and Maria discuss what types of carbohydrates you should consume more in the days before a long race. The carbs you normally skip work quite well to replenish glycogen stores so you can tap into them again on later miles.

There are carb calculators that can help you determine how many grams of carbs you need based on your size and the race you’re competing in. To make you feel less full, you can add extra carbohydrates from sports drinks and sweets.

Be sure to watch or listen to previous episodes of Run for Fun for more tips on enjoying the miles so you can live an overall healthier lifestyle.
