Russian forces fail to cross Ukraine river in ‘high risk manoeuvre’: Britain

A new intelligence report on the fighting in Ukraine shows that Russian forces recently encountered resistance in an attempted operation that Britain’s MoD described as “high risk”.

The United Kingdom posted on social media On Friday morning, Russian forces attempted to cross the Siverskyi Donets river west of Severodonetsk in the Donbass region, but were unsuccessful. According to the report, the Russians were “trying to make a breakthrough towards Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.”

The report said that images of the unsuccessful crossing showed that Russia had lost military supplies such as “substantial armored maneuvering elements” from “at least one tactical group of the battalion” and also “pontoon bridging equipment”.

The report went on to say that the main objective of the failed effort was an attempt to “enclose Ukrainian forces in the Joint Forces’ area of operations and isolate them from support or reinforcements from units in the west of the country.”

Sean Spoonts, the editor-in-chief of SOFREP, a military news agency, estimated that Russia has three months before its equipment and forces are too exhausted, forcing the country to make a difficult decision.

“I think the Russians couldn’t go much further than 90 days,” Spoonts said. “At the bleeding rate they’re going through right now, 90 days could stretch them out.”

The equipment provided to its military by Russia, which invaded Ukraine at the end of February, has been questioned. One report said that a Russian soldier called his body armor less than ideal.

The soldier, in a phone call captured and released by the Security Service of Ukraine, responded to his mother’s inquiry about the state of his equipment by saying that the body armor “we have now is terrible.”

Even conducting such a daring exercise as a river crossing speaks to the difficult position Russian commanders are in due to the pressures they are facing, as well as their general lack of “progress in their operations in eastern Ukraine.” Report .

The Russian armed forces, the report added, “have made no significant progress, although they have concentrated their forces in this area”.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which focuses on defense and foreign policy research and analysis and provides daily updates on the war, said in its May 11 assessment that Ukrainian forces northeast of Kharkiv continued to gain ground have won.

news week has asked the British Ministry of Defense and the foreign ministries of Russia and Ukraine for comments.
