Gosling singsi’m just ken“is just one of the many highlights of Barbie. The song features Gosling’s version of Ken, who finds himself in some kind of existential crisis as he wonders why he can’t get the attention and recognition he thinks he deserves not only from his respective Barbie, but the world. The backstage footage really shows how immersed Gosling was in the role and so immersed in the moment that at one point director Greta Gerwig had to suppress her laughter with her hand.
In addition to the great success of the film itself, the Barbie soundtrack, Barbie: The albumhas now topped the charts on various streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music, with “i’m just ken‘ reaches up to 13 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
“You really fall in love with this unfortunate but instantly likeable character,” says “i’m just ken‘ Writer and producer Mark Ronson. “I immediately had the idea for this line: ‘I’m just Ken / Anywhere else I’d be a 10.’ It just seemed fun. It felt a bit emo, like that poor guy. He’s so hot but he can’t tell the time of day.”
“He really did it [that] It had to follow the line of being neither funny nor parodic,” he adds. “But obviously the song is also kind of ridiculous at times. So he was really great, and when he really started hitting the big notes, I thought, This guy is a vocal powerhouse!”
