Actress Salma Hayek once teamed up with Will Smith to direct the 1999 film Wild, wild west. And while the film was always a sore point for Smith, there were certain aspects of the film that Hayek himself couldn’t stand.
So much so that she had to strain every day to get through the film.
Salma Hayek didn’t find Wild Wild West interesting when she was first offered the role
Wild, wild west saw Will Smith reunite with him men in black Director Barry Sonnenfeld for the feature film. Hayek, who was still rising as a prolific actress herself, got her hands on the film’s script thanks to Smith. Initially, Sonnenfeld was reluctant to cast Hayek in the film. But she made such an impression on Smith that the Oscar-winner pushed for her to be in the feature film.
However, Hayek had her own reservations about doing the film as well.
“When I first saw the role, it wasn’t interesting,” Hayek once told The Guardian. “But it was a very big movie with good actors and my agent said, ‘This is very good, this is going to be a big movie.'”
The film didn’t fare too well critically, but it did help raise the actor’s profile. Hayek could use Wild, wild west in combination with her other achievements to help her with roles.
“They just offered me a role in a movie that had three scenes again, this Mexican girl, and I said no and they were shocked,” she said. “They couldn’t understand it until I said, ‘No, because I’m a big shot now, because I’m in it Wild, wild west and i have about 10 covers coming out and i want a bigger part. And then they understood.”
Why Salma Hayek Was Embarrassed Making ‘Wild Wild West’
Wild, wild west doesn’t have a lot of fans. Since its release, the film has been devastated by most critics and viewers alike. Even his own star thought it was a mistake to do the film.
“I wanted to win and be the biggest movie star and what happened was there was a delay – around Wild Wild West time – I found myself promoting something because I wanted to win instead of promoting something because I believed in it,” Smith once said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
But Smith wasn’t the only one who had certain issues with the film. his co-star, eternal Actor Hayek also once voiced her grievances. At least when it came to how she was dressed in the western. In a 2002 interview with IGN, Hayek spoke about what it’s like to be naked for her biopic film Frida. Hayek confided that nudity was of little concern at the time. Especially when she compared her nudity to the outfit she was wearing west.
“I’m telling you, there’s nudity in this film, but like me Wild, wild west and I was never naked in it Wild, wild west I felt one a lot of more naked and embarrassed in that stupid costume. I would have to to press out of the trailer every day,” she said. “I can’t tell you how [much more] it was more embarrassing than actually being completely naked in bed with another women.”
Salma Hayek once shared that her Wild Wild West director had a bizarre request
Despite some of her complaints, Hayek confided that she still had a good time on the project. It helped that her co-stars and her directors had a sense of humor that kept Hayek laughing constantly. Eventually director Sonnenfeld’s humor led him to ask that From dusk to dawn star a bizarre request.
“He spent the whole movie trying to convince me to smell his left ear, which he claims smelled like a certain cheese, but the other didn’t,” Hayek once told Yahoo. “And I thought it would be the most bizarre thing, I just have to rub it, and I said I wouldn’t do that. And then at the end of the movie it’s over, you have to do it, and I did it, and it was gross. Like he begged for six months because the film took six months to make.”
