That Santa Claus Franchise is bringing back Eric Lloyd as Scott’s son Charlie (aka Sport) in Episode 2 of the Disney+ sequel series – a return that ultimately proves short-lived. But Charlie’s cameo is not at all irrelevant. In fact, it’s a father-son shared conservation that leads Scott to make a pretty drastic change.
When Scott arrives in Florida to visit Charlie, he’s already contemplating hanging up his red suspenders. The time has come to find a successor, and Scott believes Charlie is the heir apparent.
Charlie, who is now married with two sons of his own, is stunned when Scott suggests he follow in his footsteps. He tells Dad he will always cherish the time they had killing together, but he doesn’t want the gig. “The North Pole is not the right place to raise children,” he explains. “The job is not conducive to being a dedicated parent.”
His denial may surprise longtime fans, many of whom likely assumed Scott and Laura’s son would take on the mantle of Santa Claus. According to series creator Jack Burditt, it was actually one of several outcomes they considered The Santas.
“We certainly talked a lot about whether Charlie should succeed him,” he says. But when it came time to make a decision, “Charlie just seems like too good an answer, and it’s too easy of a transition.” And as fellow EP Jason Winer notes, “Eric Lloyd practically made himself an actor withdrawn. He has a very different career and a very different life, so we reached out to him and convinced him to come back and perform at this pivotal, pivotal moment in history.”
and it is a crucial moment. Charlie’s sense of raising children at the North Pole gives Scott pause. Their heart-to-heart conversation leads Scott to reflect on his commitment to his wife Carol (played again by Elizabeth Mitchell, a real showstopper as Mrs. Claus faces an identity crisis) and his relationship with their two children. Teenage Cal (Austin Kane) and Sandra (played by Allen’s real-life daughter, Elizabeth Allen-Dick). If he wants his children to have more expansive lives, the Calvins will have to take a big step.
“I want them to be in the real world a little bit,” Tim Allen tells TVLine. However, the transition will be difficult. As Scott and his brood venture outside of Santa’s Workshop, they will find that “there are upsides… and there are downsides”.
One such challenge for Scott will be curbing the desire for Santa. “Obviously being a Santa has created a real sweet tooth for Scott,” Winer says, laughing. “That doesn’t go away when he becomes a real man in the real world. The movies – especially the first one – were about what happens when a real guy becomes Santa Claus. This [show]could be described in a way as ‘What happens when Santa turns into a normal guy?’”
