School suspension in Uvalde, Texas: The active shooter, reported at Robb Elementary School, is in custody, police say

UVALDE, Texas — A reported active shooter on the campus of a Texas elementary school was taken into custody Tuesday.

Police in Uvalde, Texas, located about 97 miles west of San Antonio, reported the arrest at 1:06 p.m. on the department’s Facebook page.

The hour before, police and the Uvalde Consolidate Independent School District notified parents of Robb Elementary School students about the reported suspect on campus.

“Law enforcement is on site. Your cooperation is required at this time by not visiting campus,” Uvalde posted CISD on his Facebook page at 12:17 pm CT.

The rest of the district’s campus has also been placed in “safe status”.

The school district later informed parents that Robb elementary school students were being transported five minutes away to a community center where a reunion was planned. However, the district made it clear that students would have to be accounted for before they were released to their parents.

“Robb Elementary Parents, please do not pick up students at this time. Students must be accounted for before they are released into your care. You will be notified to pick up students once everyone is settled,” the district wrote at 12:55 p.m. CT.

City police warned the public to avoid the school, where the scene is still active.

Authorities did not immediately release details about the suspect, the reasons for the lockdown, or whether anyone was injured or killed.

The Uvalde Consolidated ISD reported a student enrollment of approximately 4,100 last school year.

The town of Uvalde has just over 14,000 inhabitants.
